Default Getting a haircut by a newbie...what do you think?

So there's an Aveda academy here in downtown (on Robson) and I read on a Vancouver forum that salon students give shampoo, scalp massage, haircut and blowdry/styling, all for only $30. I really want a scalp massage cuz I'm still getting a headache so frequently and hoping that would help. And the price is really good IMO.

Would you trust a newbie hairstylist to do all this?

Absolutely - because in this case we're talking about Aveda, and they wouldn't take on anyone who would go at your hair like a garden hedge! I bet it takes ages for them to finish but I'm sure the end result will be worth it.

There is an Aveda Academy relatively near me, my sister goes there all the time. She says there is absolutely no reason not to trust the stylists b/c the teachers are always walking around making sure they don't mess up your hair. The one near me also offers product for less, IIRC.

    I definately would.

Worst case senario from an Aveda trained stylist probably wouldn't be anywhere near as bad as some of the nightmare cuts I've had before.

K, went n made an appointment for tmr

The receptionist lady told me they even do a little makeup for you afterwards Gotta free cup of herbal tea while I was there today, too. Nice place.

I'm not gonna ask to do anything drastic to my hair so hopefully it will be aok. Just gonna have it thinned out and put more layers in.

I always go to newbies at Aveda. They are much cheaper and they take their time.

They all go to Aveda approved hair schools, right?

Heya, so I got the haircut today... It took about 2 hrs!!!!!!!!!!!! Yea the newbie hairdresser had to call over her "educator" a few times to ask her how to layer my hair. It was a nice experience as a whole though and I liked that I got to try their makeup at the end.
She told me their lipgloss is made with berries and have anti-oxidants so it's safe and good(?) even if you ingest it...not that I like to eat lipglosses...

Hubby says my hair looks the same as before so I guess it's ok that she didn't mess it up. She also flat ironed it so it's got less volume than how I usually wear it. I'll have to see what it looks like when I style it on my own if there's much difference. I just asked her to thin it out and to not cut much off cuz I wanted to keep the length. She cut off what was damaged but very minimal. The layers are more evened out now than before so I like that, too.

I thought their technique was kinda hmm old school maybe...e.g. scissors they use to give layers, they use regular scissors instead of those razor ones (you guys know which ones I'm talking about? they got like special zig zaggy kinda blades)

And their chairs, they have to step on the pump thingy to raise it up...I woulda thought they'd have electric ones

Scalp massage was nice but I wish it was longer!

Sounds good moomies. I need a cut in a major way, so maybe I'll go there.

Is it under Aveda in the phone book? I rarely get up to Robson, although it's only about four blocks from my office

You can just google Aveda Academy Vancouver... It's around Robson and Bute...past Mondo Gelato.
You'll need to make an appointment and put down a deposit of $15 (half of what your hair treatment is... I think for a grad student a cut was $40 so the deposit would be $20, the "educator" price was $50 or $60). Newbie will take a long time to do your hair so make sure you have plenty of time to spare
