I think it’s possible that this was another PR set up to place a positive spin on Tom and Katie’s marriage.
Prior to the marathon there were numerous rumors that Tom controlled everything Katie did. In an attempt to put a stop to the negative rumors, Katie runs the marathon (sure) showing she has outside interests of her own. Tom waits and cheers for Katie at the finish line to show that he fully supports his wife.
Remember earlier that year Tom’s buds all came out confirming how happily married Tom and Katie were, but that didn’t put a stop to the negative rumors.
