I have the feeling the deal has already been made, and they're
just announcing it as tentative as a matter of course. But at least
Spielberg isn't directing it -- he just doesn't have the light touch
necessary to pull off something like this. Just watch

You Can and see how darkly lit it was -- the lighting was as
somber as a courtroom drama. He could make an escapist action film
(like
Raiders) with a heavy undercurrent of tension, and yes,
he made E.T. with the scenes of the kids riding their bikes
across the moon, but I shudder to think what kind of weight
he would bring to a children's musical like this.

and the plaudits he's earned over the years.
