I think he became a vegan only recently. He's been a vegetarian for a long, long time though.

A vegetarian diet can be very healthy provided it isn't reliant on a lot of saturated-fatty things, like cheese. That clogs the arteries big time.

He might also have a genetic tendency toward bad circulation. This is something which is prevalent on my father's side of the family ... they're losing feet and legs all over the place. Scary.
