Oh, it's calculated alright. But I suspect it may have more to do with their concerns about civil liability, than the criminal case.

I'm sure his friend's family will be filing a major lawsuit for damages at some point, and any admission of negligence might be admitted in court. If they can establish the victim was at least partially responsible for his own damages, it might reduce the $$$ they have to pay.
