As for her being mentally ill, I call bullshit. I think that's just an excuse people cling to because they don't want to admit that the "sweet southern gal" image created by her handlers was phony.
I think Lindsay Lohan is an alcoholic, inherited from her father, but do people claim she's not responsible for her actions because of it? Being an addict may be a mental disease but it doesn't mean you're excused for your actions. None of Britney's behavior indicates any mental illness aside from her being an addict who is constantly spoiled and enabled. But people want it to be something else because they want her to some mental illness that means she has no control over her behavior, rather than just that she's a spoiled brat who knows right and wrong, but chooses wrong anyway.
