It's difficult for anyone, child or adult, to be famous and then suddenly...not be. That's an emotional minefield for anyone, but especially children who are the least equipped to handle it. And some also have severe problems with their parents, many of whom manage their careers and despite laws to prevent exploitation, profit heavily from their child's labour.

Oh, I'm not saying that there isn't any argument that too much money and fame too early doesn't corrupt you. But there are a good number of child stars who grew up to be quite normal and even exceptional....Shirley Temple Black, Ron Howard, Bill Mumy, Jodie Foster, Peter Billingsley.....In fact the ones who grew up well are the ones who either took themselves out of the business or began doing work behind the camera (Foster is a good director, too).
Anyway. Britney is a moron. She would have ended up like this whether or not she got famous. She doesn't have a single working brain cell, and she has a massive ego. This just sped up the process.
