The reason I think it's tacky is that they've adopted these kids from developing nations, where war is very much a reality, if not in those countries, at least in neighboring areas. I just think it's really insensitive to claim to be humanitarians and then 'dress up and play soldier' when there are thousands of people (including children just like theirs) who are being ravaged by the atrocities of war.
It seems to be there's a pretty big difference between buying Princess Jasmine and voluntarily putting on a uniform of death to pretend with your kids. I mean, seriously, if your granddaughter came up to you and said she wanted to play 'refugees from Darfur' wouldn't you be just a liiiiiittttle freaked out??

Yes I would, as she is only 4. I don't think the word you are looking for is tacky though, more like inappropriate, poor taste, or ironic. Tacky is having an Elvis minister at your wedding.
