I've read that in several places. Many of her dramatic episodes were done in an effort to get him to pay attention to her. She seemed to desperately want any sign at all that he cared about her. Unfortunately, Charles was brought up in an atmosphere where one was expected to behave a certain way and not be emotional, so he probably just couldn't respond the way she wanted him to. I imagine it was quite difficult for both of them.
