When you are running for president, your appearance is scrutinised almost as closely as your policies.




So when Hillary Clinton appeared in a television debate looking years younger tongues were soon wagging.

Observers said the 60-year-old appeared youthful and fresh-faced, prompting speculation that she has had Botox injections. Scroll down for more ...

Her aides did little to play down the suggestion and refused to confirm or deny the claims.

Prior to the TV debate, wrinkle lines could clearly be seen around Mrs Clinton's eyes and on her forehead.

But for the encounter in New Hampshire she appeared almost wrinkle-free.

Margery Egan, who covered the debate for the Boston Herald, told readers that Mrs Clinton had taken on a "flawless, almost dewy appearance".

"The instant Hillary appeared, the woman behind me whispered 'Oh look at Hillary. She's had work done'," the columnist wrote.

Last year John Spencer, who Mrs Clinton beat in the New York senate race, claimed she had had "millions of dollars of plastic surgery".
The wife of former president Bill is favourite for the Democratic nomination.

Her main rival, Illinois senator Barack Obama, is 15 years her junior.

Botox, which is derived from a lethal poison, can give women a smoother look.

Injected into problem areas, it works by paralysing the surrounding muscles.
In 2004, Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry was accused of using Botox to remove wrinkles.
