She wasn't going to marry this guy, she was just having a little romance. You don't go from being Princess of Wales to some ne'er do well son of a rich daddy's wife. She wasn't stupid.
They were killed by a drunk driver, who was being chased by papparazzi. It's sad, but these things do happen.
