One of the reporters for E!Online who did the Backstage Blog said the sun was blindingly bright on the red carpet, so it may be more out of necessity than a trend...

Did anyone see the skit they did before going on to the live red carpet show? They show a man shaving himself,then applying full face makeup; Melissa then walks in and says "Here's your dress, mom. You know, someday someone is going to catch on to you". He/she takes the dress, goes into another room, and then out comes Joan, fully dressed, who then adjusts her "package" before saying. "OK, let's go".
