Manet was very tongue in cheek for his time and he lived through the 1800s in Paris, the period D&G are nodding to. 'The Picnic' or 'Luncheon On the Grass' was his response to several genre themes at the time. He placed a nude woman in the middle of two men at a banal activity- a picnic- as kindof like, all your paintings are stupid but at least I'm making mine obvious.

And this one of a prostitute, 'Olympia', very racy stuff back then. He took all the elements of goddess worship (basically all of Titian's 'Venus of Urbino'), an attendant, an adoring pet, relaxed nude, and twisted it into a whore greeting her john. Her feet are dirty and she's wearing shoes in bed, her attendant isn't a fawning Vestal Virgin type, the cat is startled by the intrusion, and the flowers are wrapped in paper. This was avant-garde in his day.

And I agree, where are the nekkid DOODES??
