I don't really think it was a "black" thing. I think it was a "celebrity" thing. Just like the middle-aged white women who didn't think Martha Stewart should have gone to jail.
We identify with celebrities and get into a twisted mindset that the celebrities to who we are similar (color, gender, ethnic background, etc.), we support beyond all reason.
Just read some of the threads on this site where folks get downright rabid if you say something against their favorite "star."
