Because, as someone else mentioned, once the defense played the race card it was almost impossible for the jury to convict him. I was in 5th grade, and I remember the threats of rioting, etc if he were to be found guilty. The jurors and presiding judge probably also didn't want themselves and their families to be harrassed by Jesse Jackson for the rest of their lives.
