I guess in my perception the gay community has taken over and empowered certain terms(like 'queer'..Queer as Folk..Queer Eye For The Straight Guy) so that term is not so much of a problem. I do not believe the word 'fag' or any derivative of that word has reached that level of 'being taken over and empowered"..like the word queer has.
