I think he's probably too much of a "chill" dad. When I see them together in interviews and on the simple life they seem to really love each other (I can especially see that Nicole loves him), but I don't think he disciplined her well. He was probably too busy with his own career and stuff to watch her a lot and take care of her.

Nicole has said that as a teenager she was unsupervised a lot and had a lot of freedom to do whatever she wanted. I'm sure Lionel is not oblivious, but probably is too much "friend" and not enough "dad" in his relationship with Nicole.

I have also heard things about him trying to bribe her into gaining weight (offering to pay for a cruise, etc. if she gains weight). This is evidence of a dad who cares but also one that spoils his daughter and doesn't know how to "lay down the law".
