I think it's safe to say two things:
1- Too much of anything or any diet that only focus one macro nutrient is potentially bad long term.
2 - All bodies respond differently so you have to experiment and take notice to what sort fuel your body runs on best and even then with time (and abuse) that will change as well.
People, unfortunately, think that the only place you can get protein from is animal flesh and we're really not designed to digest large quantities of animal flesh.
Imagine that 12oz porterhouse fermenting in your intestines for a few weeks - mmmmmmmmm YUM.
I do have to partially disagree with the protein shake comment - I will rather often suck down a egg white protein shake in the AM as soon as I get up or after a run and I do so for two reasons, one it gets my metabolism going right in the AM and it's very easy for me to digest. What I will agree with is that most of the commercially available protein powders and drink are full absolute crap.
