I think it's the media that is doing the qualifying. It's like literature/books. Since the majority of major books published in the US are by white authors, whenever there is a non-white character introduced, they are refered to by their race--the black doctor, the latino lawyer, etc. White characters are never referred to as the white whatever. The same thing goes with adopted kids. I mean, Nicole Richie is still referred to as Lionel Richie's adopted daughter 20 years after the fact. I think most would say he's her father, full stop, yet the media continues to hang that on her. Weird, really.
