There aren't many rewards in our culture for beautiful women with brains so no wonder a lot of beautiful women and girls pretend to be stupid. If you are reasonably attractive and smart, you will still be resented, but not as much. If you are homely and smart, nobody will question it. If I had a dollar for every time a man has looked at me -- blonde, petite, fairly good-looking -- and then been shocked when I opened my mouth and proved that I was nobody's fool, I'd be rich. I've actually had guys say, "But you look so nice," as though that were some kind of clue that I was dumb.

I teach and run into this "dumb" behavior in young women all the time. Sometimes they genuinely are dumb, functionally illiterate etc. and seem proud of it. Most girls realize that at some point though, that they're going to have to rely on more than their looks to succeed, and hit the books. It comes later for some than others, but I have a LOT of twenty and thirtysomething women in my classes who are working incredibly hard to make something of themselves. I admire them, because society still puts a lot of roadblocks in their way.
