That statistic, like so many, is apparently a mangled version of the
real fact: at the time it was taken, @ 1970, more than half of
new
marriages ended in divorce. That means that half of the marriages
that occurred
in that year ended in divorce within a short time. (This
was partly because of new divorce laws that made it easier to
end a marriage.)
However, long-standing marriages were not affected by the change
in the laws; the previous generation didn't suddenly get up and say,
"Hey, let's split up! Everyone else is!"
So half of all couples do not get divorced. I'm sure snopes.com has
something to say on this subject, but I can't be bothered to look it up.
