Re: Kidman annulling marriage to Cruise in order to marry Urban
Pretty Girl is right. There is no marriage to nullify, because it technically never existed in the eyes of the church.
In other cases (where the couple had a valid church marriage), people can have their marriages nullified on the grounds that the marriage was not spiritually valid. (It was still a legal marriage and the kids are legitimate.) I was going to get my first marriage nullified, because my ex-husband was a cheater from day 1 (unknown to me), so probably had no intention of being faithful in the first place, had a history of mental problems (also unknown to me) and was an alcoholic/sex addict. He is absolutely incapable of being committed and faithful. I didn't get it done because it was 40 pages of paperwork to fill out and would have taken 6 months to a year to complete (fine and good), AND then I found out that the SOB was going to use the hard work I did, so he could marry his homewrecking girlfriend (who he cheats on) in the church. It was going to cost $400 total, but I could have requested a price break on it. (The $400 is to cover administrative costs, which was a huge bargain compared to the 10K+ my divorce cost me.)
I do think too many marriages are nullified (and think there are $$ trails with some of them), but I can understand why some people do it.
