If a Catholic was married to someone else in a civil ceremony or not in the Catholic church and gets divorced, then if this person wants to get married in the Catholic church, they have to have their previous marriage annuled before they can get married in the Catholic church. It's something like that. I have family members who are going through this now. I don't really understand it.
I found this on another website from someone commenting on the same article and looked up to find info on annulment.

So I don't know if she needs the annulment or a letter saying her marriage to Tom never existed.
