That is
not attempting to fix the bike - he's fiddling with the side stand. Attempting to fix the bike would mean touching the engine/plugs etc and getting his Hollywood manicure dirty.

And he didn't have any money on him either? There were no payphones? No business of any kind nearby that would be more than happy to let him use their phone? My bike gloves have zippers in the back that the waterproof covers can be stored in. I always kept a £1 coin in each glove for pay phones in case of emergency in an area where the mobile phone signal was weak or non-existant. In fact... *runs off to check gloves* Yes, I still have the emergency money in there. I started doing that because I was spending a lot of time on temperamental but much loved old bikes.
