Further, the "demand" will always be there. I have a friend who runs a drug court where prostitutes are in and out, in and out, and the court runs a program where they get detoxed and job training for real jobs.

You are right. It will always be around..always has been, always will. Just like with prohibition, keeping it illegal is what makes it even worse. the only way to clean it up even a little is to make it legal and have standards. And it is not the prostitution itself that usually ruins the lives. It is the drug addiction that leads to prostitution(the drug addiction itself would have wrecked their lives anyway) or the forces that have affected these women that cause them to choose this dangerous(as in illegal and unregulated) profession..those forces being abuse, neglect, poverty, etc-all of which would have ruined their lives anyway. I think the prostitution is a symptom for most of those who engage in it anyway, whether it be the women or the damaged men who solicit them.
