I've heard about this kind of thing before. There was a story a few years ago about an Italian countess whose jewels kept disappearing mysteriously and it turned out that a bird had a nest full of them! They love shiny things.

I once had two pairs of prescription sunglasses go missing, couldn't find them anywhere. About a year later when I was cutting the brush in front of the house, I came upon them both in the bushes. I just know it was a magpie or a crow who stole them.
