My folks had a drinks party for the locals too, I don't think its that strange. My take is that they might have asked the Mayor for assistant & he said, well, it's traditional... blah blah blah.. house-warming party....
Sluce - that was something that freaked me out when I lived in the US, I was used to being the one throwing the party, but Americans are amazing sometimes! Esp when one has just moved house! We had a complete stranger help us move furniture - he was saw us moving & stopped to help!
