As I understood it the whole stand off was over the fact that NATO was trying to exercise influence on Georgia b/c of its energy pipeline, and Georgia welcomed NATO's alliance ... Russia wasn't willing to let another piece of the old republic slip away so they exerted pressure on a specific piece of Georgia called Ossetia which voted to rejoin Russia at some point - which led them to today.
