It was ditched by her request and legal.
She didn't want to be associated with the name anymore, be known
and recognized as herself, to "free herself" and be an individual,
appreciated for her own talents. The interviews she gave in print and
other media after the divorce were not as nice about Elvis as they
later became, after his passing.
At that time she wanted to go into fashion design and opened up a
boutique with a friend callled Biss & Beau (of Beaulieu). That didn't
pan out, and because Lisa was underage and Vernon in bad health
(everybody expected him to go before Elvis since he'd been suffering
from congestive heart failure for years),
Ms. Beaulieu was named
executor of Elvis' will and as legal guardian for Lisa she took care
of the inheritance (not much, just 5 million). Lisa, not being the
sharpest crayon in the box, did not take over the finances at 25, as
was originally planned, but waited until she was 30, no doubt adviced
by her clever mom. That's one talent Pris has, much like Madonna:
very good at business matters. Vernon had died in 1979, and as
lousy a person as Col. Parker was, he was right when he predicted
that the real milking of Elvis was about to begin, as soon as Pris
and EPE won the court case against him, before opening up
Graceland to the public. Beaulieu never wanted to marry another
man after Elvis, because then HER name would change, too.
She's been selling herself off as Elvis' widow for decades now,
instead of the ex that she was. She met Elvis in 1960, two months
before he was shipped back to the US. Started a hungerstrike to
force her parents to let her stay at Graceland for Christmas. Moved
in with Vernon and Dee at the age of almost 17, but soon after
moved into Graceland. In years she may have spent 10 years
at Graceland, but Elvis was gone more than half of those years,
either filming in California or on tour around the US. Pris and the
other wives were only there for the occasional opening nights,
usually only in Vegas. They both had affairs throughout their
marriage. With Elvis on the road, she had liasons with her dance
instructor and her karate instructor, first back at Graceland
and later she moved to California - after Elvis had stopped
making movies. They were essentially separated since early
1972.
She's pretty much been reconstructing the myth of Elvis and
rewriting events, some of which she wasn't even present at,
for decades now. "Keep the legacy alive", my ass.
