Seems to me that renting is much more the norm (and 'socially acceptable') in the US and Europe. If you rent in the UK then people assume you are either an impoverished student, unemployed layabout on benefits, or on temporary work contract from overseas. The Ultimate Dream of most Brits is to own their own home and many put themselves into hopeless debt to achieve it.
