Hmmmm, weeeeeeeeeeelllllllll, of all the Warren movies I've seen (haven't seen all of them, and some of them I"ve only seen once ages ago) I must say I think Town and Country is definitely his worst. But it has its moments.
A lot of it though, I find almost embarrassing to watch. It's like they started with a script/premise, but that everybody lost his/her copy halfway through shooting the movie.
I think it's an indulgent movie, meaning that most of the cast are close friends (Warren, Diane, Goldie, Gary, Buck) and seem to like everything the other friend does. That way it got to be "funny" in places where it obviously was poor at best.
The first part is okay and shows potential, the part in Sun Valley is just embarrassing to me and the ending far fetched. If these old friends love each other's company so much, they should make a home movie, but not bother us with this sub par stuff.
My theory has always been that Warren was too pre-occupied with Bulworth at the time of shooting T&C, which was filmed BEFORE Bulworth. In T&C he was "just an actor for hire" while Bulworth he wrote, acted, directed and produced and was a definite masterpiece, that won approval all around.
So, 1998 was the last year in which Warren worked on a movie as an actor (with T&C first and later the brilliant Bulworth). He has always been very selective in choosing his material. Between Reds and Ishtar there's 6 years, but obviously this has been his longest interval between projects. But then, as he's said when asked about his political ambitions, his answer is that he has a very great life with children young enough to be his grandchildren and that he just wants to enjoy his wife and kids. He's really settled down and seems to be thriving on his family life now. I guess he wants to experience everything he missed out on growing up as a child and I think it's commendable he takes time to do it. He's always said that his career was never more important than real life, which is why he made so few movies to begin with.
