I witnessed a topic like this once on an L Word board. The majority said only lesbians should be playing lesbians. Reasoning: they know what its like to be a lesbian. Of course, the retort was, so should only straights play straights then too?
If you are the best actor for the role, so be it. Sexuality should have nothing to do with it.
