He hurts everyone who loves him, he will eventually hurt the people on his show and all his businesspeople, and every time he drives, he risks other people's lives.....drug abuse is never harmless....and eventually (sometimes decades).....they reach critical mass....that "harsh" sentence might be what it takes to save the guy's life if he's in deep enough.....

Incidentally your comment about punishment reminds me of something Robin Williams said about his cocaine addiction. When asked of the death of his friend John Belushi was a wake up call for him he replied "Oh yeah, huge. The grand jury helped too."

Rehab only works if the addict wants to get straight.....if rehab is used as "punishment" by temporarily removing the drugs from the addict and the addict from the drugs.....it rarely works.....
Why do rehabs never give long-term sobriety success rates?
Sometimes it takes jail to shock them into realizing how fucked up their lives have become.....wealthy rehab centers just don't have the same effect.....Robert Downey figured that one out the hard way....
