I read a synopsis of the novel:

The Ruins - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The movie was quite different in many ways from the book, yes it is totally hollywoodized meaning up the gore factor as per usual. In fact they changed so many little things that it seems like two different things besides the main theme. Everything from the characters and their actions was changed. Even if there were no book I would have found the movie disappointing, just the usual hysterical group of people. When you also find out the main premise of the movie, you're like, that's it? And it seems like the film makers were trying to flesh out the movie. The book seems like it is more intense.
