VANCOUVER, Wash. -- Neighbors in a Southwest Washington neighborhood called police Sunday morning after hearing gunfire around the home of former pro ice skater Tonya Harding.



Clark County deputy Tim Bieber told The Columbian that some neighbors complained about the sound of shots in the area near Harding's home around 10 a.m. But officers said the area is a popular place for target practice and no police report was filed.


Tenants nearby have called police to complain in the past, according to deputies. Bieber said Harding had the right to shoot on the property and that all was well.

In 1994, the Portland-born skater Harding was competing for a spot on the U.S. Olympic figure skating team when a club-wielding assailant hit competitor Nancy Kerrigan in the knee, forcing her out of the competition. Video showed Kerrigan grabbing her knee and wailing "Why me, why me?"

Harding's ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly, was accused of hatching the original plan. The investigation also eventually netted convictions of Shane Stant, the actual attacker, and Stant's uncle, Derrick Smith, who drove the getaway car.
