Maybe I've got something. The seem to like the refer to movies, right? So maybe and I know it's a stretch, but maybe 'American in London', could refer to "American Beauty'?
I know Spielberg did not direct that movie (or produce) but it was a DreamWorks production. So maybe that's how they've gotten to know each other?
I know it's a stretch, but I can't find anything either that ties Landis with theater either.
