Worst parents of celebrities

A star is born ... then the trouble starts.
Our nominees for celebs' worst moms and dads
Seeing their kids dabble in drugs, sex and rock 'n' roll is enough to freak most parents out — except in Hollywood. When Lindsay Lohan admitted in the new issue of Vanity Fair that she'd used drugs "a little" and was throwing up her lunch, her mom/manager Dina, 43, blew it off.
"It wasn't as bad as it looked," she said in the magazine, referring to an episode of "Saturday Night Live" Lohan hosted that emphasized her withering physique.
While Lohan's clueless mom might not have had a problem with her daughter doubling as a walking clothes hanger, "SNL "producer Lorne Michaels and cast member Tina Fey did. The unlikely pair staged a parental-type intervention with the skeletal Lohan, who then admitted that she had a problem.
And Lohan's mother, a former Rockette, is the good parent. The starlet's father, who left the family when Lohan was 3, has a history of drug abuse and violence and is in jail. Despite that family history, Lohan's mom defends Lindsay's wild-child lifestyle and hard partying, and even goes club-hopping with her star daughter. Dina was at a lounge with Lohan in Miami on New Year's Eve, days before the actress was hospitalized for what was called a "severe asthma attack."
Despite Hollywood's pitfalls and pressures — or perhaps because of them — some celebrities' parents aren't exactly PTA material. Turn the page for our Hall of Fame of bad Hollywood parents, who desperately need a few lessons from June Cleaver or even Beyoncé's supermom, Tina Knowles.
'THE ACCOMPLICE'
The Parent: Jaid Barrymore
The Kid: Drew Barrymore
By age 10, Drew Barrymore was getting drunk in public. By 11, the adorable "E.T." star was smoking dope, and by 13 she was blowing rails of coke. Although Drew's mother, Jaid, was purportedly distraught over her daughter's behavior, it didn't help that she was a serious partier herself. The actress' mom was a fixture on the Hollywood party circuit — and even posed nude for Playboy. Drew emancipated herself from her mom when she was only 15 years old, after Jaid tried to sell a book about raising a drug-addled child. That endeavor, like her acting career, didn't exactly pan out, and Drew refused to speak to Jaid for nine years. Today, both Barrymores have cleaned up their act, and the two have a tenuous relationship.
'THE CONTROL FREAK'
The Parent: Joe Simpson
The Kid: Jessica Simpson
Having a Baptist minister as a father is tough enough — but having your dad manage every aspect of your life (while wearing a stud earring) is a veritable nightmare. Former holy roller Joe Simpson is said to manage his pop starlet daughters' careers right down to their relationships. While Joe has publicly said that he does not get involved in either Jessica or Ashlee's personal lives, it's been reported that Daddy played a role in breaking up Jessica's marriage to Nick Lachey. While Joe rules the Simpson clan with an iron fist, he also seems to feel at liberty making bizarre (read: creepy) comments about his daughters, like this gem: "Jessica never tries to be sexy ... She just is sexy. If you put her in a T-shirt or you put her in a bustier, she's sexy in both. She's got double D's! You can't cover those suckers up!" Classy.
'THE BEST FRIEND'
The Parent: Lisa Gastineau
The Kid: Brittny Gastineau
Partying and picking up men with your mother shouldn't ever be considered normal, not even in Tinseltown. But mother-daughter team Lisa and Brittny have made a career out of tag-teaming with each other on their E! show "Gastineau Girls." Ex-model Lisa, who had Brittny with former NFL star Mark Gastineau, has said that people can't tell that the pair are mother and daughter, ostensibly because of their close relationship and Lisa's youthful looks. Stranger yet, the show advertises Lisa and Brittny as "rivals — which one will have it all?" But it's hard to imagine anyone winning in this bizarre scenario.
'THE STAGE PARENT FROM HELL'
The Parent: Joe Jackson
The Kid: Michael Jackson
Between his terrifying plastic surgery and legal woes, Michael Jackson has plenty of problems — some of which he blames on his father, Joe Jackson. Michael says that as the starring member of his family's famous musical group, the Jackson Five, he never had a childhood, and that his father beat him into working harder. While certainly his father's discipline helped propel the group, and Michael, into international stardom, Jackson has said in the past that just thinking about his dad makes him want to throw up. Joe may also be the catalyst for Jacko's cosmetic surgery O.D. — the troubled pop star says his father criticized him for having a "big nose." The nose is "fixed," so to speak, but not the relationship. Nonetheless, both his mother and father supported him after he was charged with molesting children.
'THE BIGMOUTH'
The Parent: Nancy Dow
The Kid: Jennifer Aniston
The last thing most kids expect is for their parents to talk behind their back — especially if they're a celebrity. But Jennifer Aniston caught her mother, Nancy Dow, doing exactly that — ragging on her and the "Rachel" hairdo on a television gossip program in 1997. Dow's comments led to an estrangement from Aniston, who even refused to invite her mom to her wedding with Brad Pitt. After claiming that she was tricked into making the comments, Dow then went on to write a book, "From Mother and Daughter to Friends: A Memoir," about her nonexistent relationship with her daughter. But during Aniston's tumultuous divorce from Brad Pitt last fall, the mother and daughter reunited. Maybe mom was jealous of her wealthy daughter's career: Dow is most famous for her starring role in a '60s soft-core porn flick.
'THE CRITIC'
The Parent: Jon Voight
The Kid: Angelina Jolie
Claiming that your daughter has "serious mental problems" on television probably isn't the best way to express your concern, as actor Jon Voight learned. Apparently his daughter Angelina Jolie's bizarre behavior — such as wearing a vial of then-*husband Billy Bob Thornton's blood around her neck — inspired Voight's comments.
Voight took his public critique a step further, too, dishing that Jolie's problems had been dogging her since childhood. In response, Jolie cut off her relationship with her famous pop, saying that it wasn't "healthy" for her to be around him. Since the throw-down, Voight has tried to mend the divide, claiming that he's supportive of Jolie's relationship with Brad Pitt, and that he wants to see his grandkids, Maddox and Zahara. But Jolie is staying mum and keeping her distance.
Casting a pall in the family
If parents of rising stars have so much trouble raising their kids, it should come as no surprise that celebrity parents have troubles, too. And who can blame them? With all the distracting glamorous parties, jet-setting and free loot, who has time to change diapers and help with homework? Here, some of Hollywood's most notorious parents:
THE ORIGINAL
The Parent: Joan Crawford
The Kid: Christina Crawford
Berating her adopted daughter, Christina, for using wire hangers apparently seemed perfectly legitimate to famous silver screen actress Joan Crawford. In another notorious episode, the aging actress yanked her four children and the hired help out of bed in the middle of the night and ordered them to help her uproot her prize rose garden, then clean the thorny mess. Christina wrote an exposé after her mother's death from pancreatic cancer, which was later turned into the film "Mommie Dearest." It revealed Crawford's alcoholism, wild flings with men and mental meltdown. Even at the end, Crawford had no remorse, excising her long-suffering daughter from her will.
THE DEADBEAT
The Parent: Kevin Federline
The Kid: Sean Preston Spears-Federline
Note to Britney: A boyfriend who ditches his pregnant girlfriend for you isn't that much of a catch. But that's exactly the charge that actress Shar Jackson is levying against former bf and backup dancer Kevin Federline (with whom she has two children). Federline's relationship skills aren't his only bad quality. The wanna-be rapper, who had a son with his wife, Britney Spears, last fall, has reportedly been spending more time in clubs than he has at home with the baby. Although Federline apparently puts in face time with his two kids by Jackson, Spears is said to be infuriated by his lack of parenting skills. We hate to say "I told you so ..."
THE FEUDING COUPLE
The Parents: Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin
The Kid: Ireland Basinger
Bitter divorces are even worse when kids are involved, as Ireland Basinger can surely attest. The 10-year-old daughter of Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin is caught in the midst of a brutal custody battle that began three years ago following the celebrity couple's split. Currently, the former lovers are battling over visitation rights, including having a court-appointed supervisor with Ireland while she's visiting Baldwin, and strictly timing Basinger's telephone calls with her daughter. Ireland is said to be in what is likely much-needed therapy, although now even her shrink has gotten involved.
THE TRAIN WRECK
The Parent: Courtney Love
The Kid: Frances Bean Cobain
Poor Frances Bean. Not only did the 13-year-old's father, Kurt Cobain, commit suicide, but her over-the-top mother has had a string of run-ins with police. After Love lost custody of her daughter following drug and assault charges, Frances has lived intermittently with her grandmother. Love won her girl back last January, but then, yes, lost her again in July after getting caught with drugs and violating her probation. Mom was sent to rehab in September, and was released in November, but prior to the rehab stint, she appeared on television in a roast for Pamela Anderson — visibly drunk, she showed off her panties to the audience, explaining, "I've been f— sober for a year!" Talk about getting embarrassed by Mom!
