I hear ya. On the one hand, you have some horrible allegations against an evil man who took advantage of a poor, confused mentally ill woman.
On the other, you have a publicist's dream come true--what better way to deflect Brit's own horrible behavior than with said convenient evil scapegoat. Having her much-criticized parents swoop in to save the day is...wow...an added bonus.
So yeah. I'd say cautious cynical sympathy is the key here.
